RE: Neverending White Lights?

I really enjoy their last record..besides the Jimmy track. How it happened that Jimmy came to guest on both albums..someone around here I'm sure can give better background on it, but I think much of it had to do with Daniel Victor being a big Ours fan and maybe just getting in contact with mgmt/Jimmy.

RE: Neverending White Lights?

YES i like the 2nd album too! i haven't been able to get my hands on the 1st one, so i've only heard the track with Jimmy on it.

i'm curious about the NWL live shows too...does DV somehow do it all himself or is it a NIN situation where he brings in other musicians...i'll have to watch some vids on youtube or something to figure that one out :)

RE: Neverending White Lights?

He's got a band he plays with and he sings most of the songs himself. I've seen them twice. They're OK, but yeah...I prefer listening to the record than the live shows.

RE: Neverending White Lights?

yeah it's weird, i've had the 1st record for a few years now, but never really got into it until recently....good stuff. Daniel's a nice guy too, said hello to him @ the St. Andrews Hall show, he was very cordial.

RE: Neverending White Lights?

Love the 2nd NWL album, especially the song on which Jimmy sings. I'd love to hear Jimmy do a whole album of songs in the same vein as Dove Colored Sky.

Daniel Victor also has a FAB side project called Black Ribbons, although it hasn't really gotten off the ground yet. Still worth checking out.

Yeah...it's probably very hard to translate the records to live show. There's so much production on it...they'd have to probably get an orchestra of musicians and a couple of full choirs to make it sound the same.

So a live show is a different experience than the record.

DV is one of my favorite musicians. I think he's an absolute virtuoso. When you listen to a song like Dove Coloured Sky...there is so many layers and production in that and he did nearly all of it himself, every instrument and chord ...in a basement. So instead of hiring tons of people to come play on the record, he did it all himself. Talent! Dunno anything about him as a person, but as an artist I really respect him.

NWL introduced me to Ours so for that I'm greatful.

Oh the original question...yeah I think I read that he was already a fan and just got in contact with Jimmy at a show or something like SoundscapeMN said. After that they became friends. I know he thinks the world of Jimmy, so that's probably how he ended up on both records.

I believe you're right, he just met with him at a show and they got together later on for the record.

as for the second, I asked Daniel and got this nice qoute from him.

"Dove Coloured Sky was the first track I had written for the new album. It was instantly crushing, even in demo-form and I knew I wanted to find the right vocalist to bring it to life. I initially didn't want to revist any of the singers from the debut album, since I wanted to make room to work with new talent. However, as the album progressed into production, finding a singer for that particular track proved difficult. It needed the right character, the right range, and the right conviction. I knew it was a standout track, and I knew there was only ONE person who would be able to hit it home, Jimmy. I called him and asked if he would give it a shot, and he was interested. Eventually, I got him into my studio and we hammered it out. Listening back at the session, I couldn't think of anyone else who would have done the job he did. He had been touring for 2 months, his voice was tired and we were trying to find a place in his voice for this song. Breathy and warm, floating yet direct, dreamlike and strikingly memorable. He did it. And I worked relentlessly on mixing it afterwards to his liking, and mine, which took some hard work. We nailed it at the last minute, and it landed on the record as the opening song. It's now exactly the way I had heard the song in my head and the album's highlight."

RE: Neverending White Lights?

New Blog.

So it looks like a fall release, but good to hear progress is being made.

I'm hoping you're all still with me. I've been toiling in the underground caves like a madman making this new record, and it's almost complete. "Normal" life is still on hold. I have errands to run, places to go, things to do, bills to pay, and I should probably get back to some form of exercise besides pacing. Oh, and I need some sun, I'm drastically pale. And maybe throw a normal sleeping pattern in there.

I'm about 3 months (and counting) past when I thought I would have a finished album in my hands. Having started last October, and it now being mid-May. I suppose it's no Chinese Democracy for time, but I see no reason to wait really long periods before making new records. At the end of the day, it really just has to be ready. And it has to be a record that moves me start to finish.

Often times in the writing/recording process, I write so much music that I could seemingly never release it all. But, it doesn't all take me to that place. If I don't feel the sock to the stomach, I put it aside. There has to be something in there. I suppose it's quite personal, since what hits me probably won't hit you the same. Everyone has a different favourite song. And different associations with each song. I make the edits here, and what winds up on the cutting room floor is probably for the best. Besides, a CD can only hold 80 minutes. Wait....did I just use the term compact disc? Damn. I suppose it doesn't matter how many songs could seemingly be on a record these days if it's digital. I never thought of that until now. However, processing music is a brain thing - and I think 12 or 13 tracks will be enough for this round. Then, we'll look at releasing the rest later.

And as for Black Ribbons. Every time I listen to that record I just shake my head. This thing should have come out. I want you all to hear it. Maybe next year I'll officially release it.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello. And check in. I'll be doing vocals in the next couple weeks. Then into mixing. Then finishing. So, I'd predict a matter of weeks until this thing is finished, and maybe out in fall. Imagine that! We'll see....

RE: Neverending White Lights?

Oooh, thanks for the info. A friend of mine got me into NWL, and I bought the first album off itunes and love it. Haven't gotten the 2nd yet but love Dove Colored Sky.

I think NWL's music is haunting. And eretheral. And romantic. And just awesome.

RE: Neverending White Lights?

"haunting, ethereal, and romantic" are 3 very good words to describe them. Perhaps "surreal" at times as well.

check out this track Daniel Victor collaborated with jDiggz

as for Act 3:

Daniel Victor Wrote:

As for my new album, I'm mixing it next week in Brooklyn with producer Gus Van Go (The Stills, Priestess). I'm in the final week of studio tracks and re-dos and tweaks and such and I'm going absolutely mad trying to pick the final songs and finish them properly.

I feel sick about how heavy my album has weighed on me and how decision making along the way has been so difficult. I have enough content for 3 albums, which has cost me a lot...mentally.  Soon, I will be able to put that to rest and let it go. Soon. We have a tentative release date mapped out, more on that later.

RE: Neverending White Lights?

new album is pushed back until March of 2011..

Go here to hear a new song "The Lonely War"

NEW SONG PREVIEW! ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT!
NEW SONG PREVIEW! ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT!

The official release date of the new Neverending White Lights album, ACT III: Love Will Ruin has been moved to March 2011.

I had the misfortune of rupturing a vocal cord a couple months ago. The doctors told me I couldn't sing, perform or speak for some time. There was simply no way for me to release a new album this year. Unfortunately, before I was aware of the severity of my condition (I thought it was merely a cold) I had been performing and recording with it. I even tracked one of the final vocals with it, forcing the sounds out of me through the pain, not realizing I was only damaging myself worse. Much worse. The specialist keeps telling me that if it scars, I may never be able to sing again. It's a lot to think about, and I really want to take this fall to focus on getting better. I'm keeping a positive outlook on things.

In the meantime, I'm going to post a BRAND NEW SONG!! This is only available for preview ONE WEEK ONLY. This is the first new music NWL has released to the public in three years. At least you will get a sense of what I've been up to. I hope you enjoy it.
GO LISTEN HERE NOW: The Lonely War by Neverending White Lights

This NWL track features Evan Konrad of the band Bed of Stars. He is the most recent signing to my Ocean record label, and I've just finished producing his debut E.P due out next year. If you've followed me online, you know who he is. His immense talent is awe-inspiring, and his vocal range is astounding. A true gem. Please visit his Myspace page and lose yourself: http://www.bedofstars.bandcamp.com

I will announce the NWL website launch sometime later this fall. And also an Act III track list, guest information and some other new songs for preview.
Thank you for waiting patiently, and I hope this news finds you in good (better) health (than me).
