I really enjoy their last record..besides the Jimmy track. How it happened that Jimmy came to guest on both albums..someone around here I'm sure can give better background on it, but I think much of it had to do with Daniel Victor being a big Ours fan and maybe just getting in contact with mgmt/Jimmy.

YES i like the 2nd album too! i haven't been able to get my hands on the 1st one, so i've only heard the track with Jimmy on it.
i'm curious about the NWL live shows too...does DV somehow do it all himself or is it a NIN situation where he brings in other musicians...i'll have to watch some vids on youtube or something to figure that one out

He's got a band he plays with and he sings most of the songs himself. I've seen them twice. They're OK, but yeah...I prefer listening to the record than the live shows.

yeah it's weird, i've had the 1st record for a few years now, but never really got into it until recently....good stuff. Daniel's a nice guy too, said hello to him @ the St. Andrews Hall show, he was very cordial.

Love the 2nd NWL album, especially the song on which Jimmy sings. I'd love to hear Jimmy do a whole album of songs in the same vein as Dove Colored Sky.
Daniel Victor also has a FAB side project called Black Ribbons, although it hasn't really gotten off the ground yet. Still worth checking out.

Yeah...it's probably very hard to translate the records to live show. There's so much production on it...they'd have to probably get an orchestra of musicians and a couple of full choirs to make it sound the same. So a live show is a different experience than the record. DV is one of my favorite musicians. I think he's an absolute virtuoso. When you listen to a song like Dove Coloured Sky...there is so many layers and production in that and he did nearly all of it himself, every instrument and chord ...in a basement. So instead of hiring tons of people to come play on the record, he did it all himself. Talent! Dunno anything about him as a person, but as an artist I really respect him. NWL introduced me to Ours so for that I'm greatful. Oh the original question...yeah I think I read that he was already a fan and just got in contact with Jimmy at a show or something like SoundscapeMN said. After that they became friends. I know he thinks the world of Jimmy, so that's probably how he ended up on both records.

I believe you're right, he just met with him at a show and they got together later on for the record. as for the second, I asked Daniel and got this nice qoute from him. "Dove Coloured Sky was the first track I had written for the new album. It was instantly crushing, even in demo-form and I knew I wanted to find the right vocalist to bring it to life. I initially didn't want to revist any of the singers from the debut album, since I wanted to make room to work with new talent. However, as the album progressed into production, finding a singer for that particular track proved difficult. It needed the right character, the right range, and the right conviction. I knew it was a standout track, and I knew there was only ONE person who would be able to hit it home, Jimmy. I called him and asked if he would give it a shot, and he was interested. Eventually, I got him into my studio and we hammered it out. Listening back at the session, I couldn't think of anyone else who would have done the job he did. He had been touring for 2 months, his voice was tired and we were trying to find a place in his voice for this song. Breathy and warm, floating yet direct, dreamlike and strikingly memorable. He did it. And I worked relentlessly on mixing it afterwards to his liking, and mine, which took some hard work. We nailed it at the last minute, and it landed on the record as the opening song. It's now exactly the way I had heard the song in my head and the album's highlight." -Daniel Victor

Oooh, thanks for the info. A friend of mine got me into NWL, and I bought the first album off itunes and love it. Haven't gotten the 2nd yet but love Dove Colored Sky.
I think NWL's music is haunting. And eretheral. And romantic. And just awesome.

"haunting, ethereal, and romantic" are 3 very good words to describe them. Perhaps "surreal" at times as well.

I'm in the final week of studio tracks and re-dos and tweaks and such and I'm going absolutely mad trying to pick the final songs and finish them properly.
