New Boots

I just bought a pair of Timberlands and they fit really well...

OK for real...

The short of it:

Greetings all. I’ve sent some new audio boots to killtheband that will be available shortly (no official release date Grin).

The long of it:

THE LAST TWO NIGHTS AT MAXWELL’S

Rewind…
Well it had been about 15 years since I last saw Jimmy sing live. He was rehearsing with his band, Harmony Bandits, I think it was at the time, as my band was coming in for our own session at Boulevard Studios in New Milford. I remember peering through the studio’s glass window like it was yesterday, thinking, “whoa, who is this dude?!? Many reasons had kept me from seeing OURS since then but the wait was now over. Being a taper, I was twice as anxious for this night to arrive. And having just learned that Jimmy had lost a close family member, it was destined to be an emotional two nights. I was not wrong.

Night One didn’t start off too well. Thanks to the incorrect info the club gave me about the show time, I arrived 3 songs late and missed Murder/Mercy/Ran Away and barely caught the beginning of Flowers. The room was comfortably full. This night was supposed to be a test recording for the show 2 nights later so it involved changing locations a couple of times to get a feel for the room. What I felt was a lot of chatty people which, thankfully was less of a problem on night two. The shushing in the crowd during Ave/God is evidence that I was not the only one who wished some would have left the water cooler talk at home. Nevertheless, this was a great show. The emotion was intense yet somehow it still paled in comparison to night two.

Most of these recordings (MD) were taped from about the exact center of the room and it happens to be a small room so it was loud and given Jimmy’s range, it was a miracle my microphone didn’t just combust. The positive side of this venue is also its size. To see a band of this caliber in a room this small is a rare treat, and if Ours achieves the success we all wish for them, it will be an even rarer treat.

Night one highlights included:
-An 18 minute spacey jam that I cannot identify. Anyone?
-Also, Pit joins the band on drums for Fallen Souls. Remember, Zambia was the drummer at the time for these shows. As Jimmy said on this night, Ours is a family, its members come, go, return, etc. and this moment planted a seed for what would become Pit’s eventual return to the band.

Night two may have been one of the most special nights in Ours history. It was almost all friends and family in attendance. The loss of a loved one made this an especially difficult time for Jimmy (and a lot of other people) and the emotion that filled the room on this night reached heights I never could have anticipated.

It was a Saturday and although parking in Hoboken is no treat, I managed to arrive in time for Zoe Bonham who was good (Caitlin from Blue Hippopotamus played upright bass)…to whoever mentioned that Ours never has good openers, I beg to differ. In the NJ area we’ve had pretty good openers including, Zoe, Blue Hippo and Uniform in the past nine months.

Again I missed the beginning of Murder as I did not expect such a quick transition from Static to Ours.

The downside: Some assmunch caused some commotion at the end of Ave/God but thankfully left. I think he might have been disrespecting the music and someone let him have it…verbally. It ended without incident. Peace and love people.

The upside: Everything else. On this night, Ave/God was the most emotional live vocal performance I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen over 200 concerts. The tribute, the silence in the crowd (you could hear a pin drop relative to night one’s Ave/God ).

Other night two highlights include:
-What I believe Jimmy said was the first live performance of Willing.
-And both nights version of Sometimes had the stripped down beginning.

RE: New Boots

I enjoyed your post and I hope you will be attending the shows coming up on the 14th 18th and 25th. I was at the canal room show and your right, Zoe and Blue Hippo. are both great, I would love it if some one could record Catlin show sometime, I know she's in and out the studio these days but we all know how hard it is to crave out recordings. I may be coming up for the Opus show but that's on the 1st off May and that's "Derby" week here in Kentucky and things get a little crazy here work wise, not to mention my B-day is the 4th (Derby EVE) and I will fall into a deep depression as time catches up to me.

RE: New Boots

I was at one of those shows, think it was the first night, as I remember a slightly tipsy Pit taking over on drums for one song. He did well! I think that WAS the turning point that signaled his return.

I do not know but I can tell you that my recording is exactly as it went down. No songs were eliminated, added or order rearranged. Perhaps one is the 6/1/06 show???
