2007 Albums
#1
I started a topic on '06 around this time last year. I guess it's late or early depending on how you look at it, but anyway, what albums are you really into that have come out this year?; and what albums are you most looking forward to (besides Ours of course).

I guess my 1st Quarter report got swapped and I'm just going to wait to make an official ranking when the Mid-Season time comes around June-ish. But so far for 2007 this is my list:

Kaddisfly - SET SAIL THE PRAIRIE..over 100 plays..it's at the top of the Mountain and everyone else is failing to knock it over.

Fair To Midland - (Leaks count) FABLES FROM A MAYFLY: WHAT I TELL YOU THREE TIMES IS TRUE..love this disc and band. Addictive as hell right now. June 12th is like March 6th, a Holiday for me.

Bloc Party - A WEEKEND IN THE CITY..layer and riff and hook beginning to end.

House of Fools - LIVE AND LEARN..love this debut disc. Really a complete introspective Rock-Opera of sorts. Not a boring or bad moment on it.

Aereogramme - MY HEART HAS A WISH THAT YOU WOULD NOT GO..made me into a fan. Not a bad song on this one, and like 3 or 4 songs really stand out. "The Running Man" maybe being the best. Mew fans could really dig this band.

Kiss Kiss - REALITY VS. THE OPTIMIST..32minutes, but seems longer. Impressive experimental yet flowing debut.

Silverchair - YOUNG MODERN..need to hear it more, but a few times through and I really like it, esp the use of string arrangements. When I'll be able to buy it is a whole nother story.

Fields - EVERYTHING LAST WINTER..i only played it twice, and it's not something that's got me obsessed (like K-Fly or FTM) but this band have a lot fo what I love about the band Pure Reason Revolution. Vocal harmonies from male-female..textures and layers..but more FOLKY. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young seems to be a band they remind me a lot of.

Pain of Salvation
- SCARSICK
Porcupine Tree - FEAR OF A BLANK PLANET
Marillion - SOMEWHERE ELSE
Blackield - BLACKFIELD II
Rush - SNAKES AND ARROWS

all 5 of these discs did not meet my hopes/expectations to varying degrees. FoaBP got way too hyped and thus far doesn't have the replayability of their last 3 discs. Not the energy or flow or it just has me wondering why I want to go back to it. PoS is still a good record, but by their standards it's a middle-of-the-pack output. Marillion just is slow and ballady and depressing. After a number of plays it's gotten a bit better, but only about 3 or 4 songs are really *classics* to me. The good news is they recorded a handful of other songs that'll make it onto their next record expected out in Spring'08. Blackfield was just decent, but not much better than the 1st. And Rush..well it's too much like modern Rush than I hoped. Better than their last, but not a return to their *classic* sound really..only one 1 or 2 songs as best.

I have a confession to make - it's May and I haven't bought a single new CD this year! To be honest, there's been nothing that's tickled my fancy and I have listened to quite a bit of stuff on the net.

However, I am looking forward to:
Ours (double duh!)
Etched In Blood by The Dreaming
Daydream Anonymous by InMe (yay - thought there'd never be album number 3 but thank god we get that and another iminent tour!)
Anything Dave McPherson decides to release - possibly only an EP
And whatever new things I discover - something's bound to capture my imagination sooner or later.

Might check out the new Manic Street Preachers album as it's supposed to be a return to Everything Must Go era form. The last two were pathetic and unlistenable.

Yesterday I bought Patrick Wolf's latest: The Magical Position. Of course, I'll have to listen to it a few more times before coming to a decision, but I can already say that there are 3 songs on the CD that make it worth the price.

It's more of a dance CD, though, that the poetry-put-to-music that is Wind In the Wires.

As much as I'd like to see it, I don't think Mew will have one out this year. Probably first few of '08 though.

I'm very excited for some new Doves and Dredg. Still haven't see Doves live. New album gives them a reason to tour the US again.

U2 will probably be average. Imogen Heap - that'll be cool. Hope they don't mess it up. Interpol in July. That'll be awesome I bet - but more of the same I think.

I really doubt these two will release anything this year. But I'm glad you reminded me, because these will be two releases I'll look forward to next year.

Some stuff you missed that has NOT been released:
Thrice - TBA
Eisley - Combinations
Radiohead - TBA

Thrice is my most anticipated album of the year by far. Eisley, Circa Survive, Radiohead and The Dear Hunter are my next most anticipated.
The Mars Volta, The Receiving End of Sirens, and Ours follow after those. TMV and TREOS would be higher up, but Amputechture was kind of a let down, and Casey left TREOS, so their future is up in the air.

also,
Bjork - Volta
The Honorary Title - Scream and Light Up the Sky
Rufus Wainwright - Release the Stars
Omar Rodriguez Lopez - Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo
Dillinger Escape Plan - TBA
Minus the Bear - (I don't remember) (I'm not looking forward to this, but I know a lot of people are)
The Postal Service - TBA (so glad they decided to record another album)

Albums that have been released already:
Blonde Redhead - 23 (I really like this cd. It's not as good as Misery is a Butterfly, but it's still good.
Glos - Harmonium (also great)
Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (not as good as I had hoped, but still good overall)
God is an Astronaut - Far From Refuge (same story)
Poison the Well - Versions (pretty good, but a bit too bleak for my taste. The lyrics are pretty terrible, but do people even listen to hardcore for the lyrics?)
Feist - The Reminder (I'll hold my opinion on this. I need to give it a good listen)
Brother Ali - The Undisputed Truth (Same as Feist)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some that have been released and that will be released, but that's a big list as it is.

Damn, what an awesome year for music. Seriously, the stars aligned this year.

spaz, what do you think of Black Lab's new album? Or would you recommend another? Or both?

Trathena Wrote:spaz, what do you think of Black Lab's new album? Or would you recommend another? Or both?

They have 3 Black Lab albums for sale on their site (http://www.blacklabworld.com) plus 1 side project (Cake or Death) and Durham (Paul's band before Black Lab). I believe they are available on i-Tunes if you want to hear previews. They do have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/blacklabband), too.

The 3 albums for sale are the 1st album re-released with 2 bonus songs (Your Body Above Me), the 2nd album (See the Sun), and the 3rd one I already mentioned. I'd listen to them first, but it's hard for me to pick I guess. I had heard a bunch of songs on the 3rd album in demo form from their MP3 of the month club (you get an email each month with a song for an entire year...it was $18 IIRC). The albums cost $12 each, but you can buy any 3 for $30. The new one has a bonus cover...Your Ghost by Kristen Hersh of Throwing Muses.

I'd check out samples and go from there. It's just kind of funny/sad about some of the similarities between Black Lab and Ours as far as labels and such. BL was on Geffen for YBAM and the label merged or whatever...he then got a deal with Sony/Epic and they got dropped again or whatever. Finally, he said fuck it and has released stuff on his own after suing to get the rights to the 2nd album back...

Already released:
Beirut - Lon Gisland (mostly because I'm dying for their new album -- I'm never really that into listening to 5-song EP's, but the music is soooo great)
Chevelle - Vena Sera (but I haven't actually listened that much...)
Detroit Cobras - Tied and True (okay, I admit that I'm a bit biased here... I'm at their label one day a week)
Placebo - Meds re-release (saw them for the first time a few weeks ago; long time fan, though)
Piebald - Accidental Gentlemen (these guys are one of the few bands that, like Ours, I never get tired of listening to)
Silverchair - Young Modern (I'm so glad these guys are making music I like again... it's totally different from their old stuff and absolutely amazing -- so happy they'll be at Lollapalooza this year!)

To be released:
The Narrator - All that to the Wall (sooo close I can taste it!)
Gore Gore Girls - Get the Gore (yup, another Bloodshot band : ))
Dredg
Interpol - Our Love to Admire

Didn't get a chance to pick it up in 2006, so it's new to me in 2007:
Matt Mays & El Torpedo - When the Angels Make Contact (wow, soooo good!)
Pete Yorn - Nightcrawler (saw him live earlier this year. Mmmm.)
And now, the most embarrassing purchase this year, hands down...: Justin Timberlake - FutureSexLoveSounds (what's even worse than holding out for months and caving into buying, I can honestly say I think the guy is talented on this album and listen to it pretty frequently. This goes against my very nature to even admit it.)

You didn't like Amputechture, Juturna? That's too bad. It might be my favorite one. I was a little (but not much I assure you) let down with Frances the Mute after De-loused (which clearly rules) but Amputechture blows my mind. Day Of The Baphomets is my favorite Mars Volta jam ever (check out that hot bass playing at the beginning of the track alone). To each his own.

AMP to me was their worst. Too many similar chord progressions and similar sounding melodies and alot of it just dragged. FTM atleast had those HUGE climaxes to wait for. And DELOUSED just flows incredibly well beginning to end. I'm hoping their follow-up will be more similar to those other 2, altho it was written at the same time as AMP which worries me. Otoh, I like some of Omar's new solo disc so maybe that could help.

Also forgot one other
Superior - NEW WORLD ORDER comes out in late July.

I hear ya, soundscape, AMP took a few listens for me. And, don't get me wrong, I love FTM. It's just my least favorite, and that's probably just cause of the last song. I love long songs, but it really meanders at spots. I have found myself on more than one occasion sitting down and going "ok, today is the day that Frances the Mute blows me away completely" and I put it on and I'm loving the first four tracks like all hell get out and the last song starts and I'm vibing harcore on it, loving it, but about fifteen minutes into it, the wanking loses me and I kinda drift off and stop paying attention. Still love the album, just stating my issues with it. I can see how you feel AMP drags, I don't feel that way, but trust me I can see where you are coming from. It certainly is their most self-indulgent record, I just feel that the jam outs have more personality than FTM. Deloused rules the school, no doubt. Best album, song wise. I like AMP the best a concept of what a progressive band should be.

So did anyone get Blonde Redheads "23" or the new Bjork?

I'm a HUGE Blonde Redhead fan! I LOVED their last album "Misery Is A Butterfly", still my all time favorite is "In An Expression Of The Inexpressible". As for the new album it seems very tame to me. It's not bad, but it not amazing either. It's good none the less, even though alot of the songs tend to sound the same.

The new Bjork is...well....ehh...pretty good. It has tracks produced by Timbaland, which is enough to make me want to use this CD for a drink coaster, but I won't cuz I'm listening to it now and it ain't too bad. Why Bjork worked with Timbaland is beyond me. Some say he's an amazing producer, and the rest who don't think so are smart.

Coheed just entered the studio and Imogen Heap I read on her forum the other day the album is like 5 months from coming out. The tracklist is already pretty clear (kinda like Ours was maybe 3 or 4 mos ago). See this topic titled "New Album Complete?" http://www.imogenheap.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6039

I will add tho on the list I posted above..a lot of records are looking at fall releases which can often send them back til the following late Winter/Early Spring (see Kaddisfly, Blackfield, Pain of Salvation for this past year).

Among those:
Margot, Anathallo and Opeth I could see. Mew, PRR and Oceansize possibly, altho atleast with Oceansize they are in the studio right now recording.

Plus some others like Demians, Peter Gabriel (2 of his), Klimt 1918, One Republic, Bend Sinister, Janus, Kaura, Cavil At Rest, and Revere all may release stuff this year but the information has been next to nothing about most of them.

And of course every year I come across many new albums/bands that I have no clue about right now. 60+ bands last year, and like 10 or 15 already this year.

Quote:Some stuff you missed that has NOT been released:

yeah, well I don't care much for the little I've heard of Thrice and Radiohead I know a lot of people dig and I am definitely someone who is into bands who have been compared to/influence by them..but I am not a Radiohead fan. I've tried many many times..kinda like CS or FNY..I just doubt if they'll ever be for me. But then again, U2 was the same way less than 10 years ago for me. But Thom Yorke's voice beyond everything else they do, I just have never been able to stomach.

I listened to it a number of times after getting it and post-leak and while it has some nice moments..VISCERA EYES esp..I find only about 50% if less of it reason to go back and play it..not unlike the new Porcupine Tree disc. Maybe I'm not believing in the *hype*..and maybe one day AMP will register more with me, but right now I'd rather hear their other 2 discs more often.

Seriously, I haven't been this happy to be wrong in a while. I love Imgoen Heap's work, and I also checked on Coheed and it looks like you're right. Really though, there is nothing left for next year, except maybe Yndi Halda (YES) and Coldplay.

Quote:yeah, well I don't care much for the little I've heard of Thrice
I know, I know, Thrice is not a cool band to like anymore, but seriously, I have not come across a more genuine group of musicians in today's scene. They are a great bunch of guys, solid musicians, and they have plenty of integrity. They have a back catalog that didn't stand the test of time too well and probably wouldn't be popular with any of you, but their recent work is worth checking out. Listen to the following two songs from their previous album:

and this great live performance: (This is a very Isis-like song).

But.... Paranoid Android... nah, I can understand. They were an acquired taste for me, and frankly, I think they are overrated. But only slightly, because they really did bring a lot of great and fresh things to the table, and I think Radiohead is one of the few bands that has managed to stay relevant after all these years.
Quote:But Thom Yorke's voice beyond everything else they do, I just have never been able to stomach.
That's something I haven't heard before. Ah well.

This is exactly how I feel about FTM, excluding the part about it being your least favorite. On a good day, I like it as much as, and on rare occasions, even more than Deloused. But generally, Deloused reigns supreme, and Frances follows shortly after. With Amputechture, they really had me with the first two songs. I remember listening to them and thinking "I can't believe it, they've actually outdone themselves." As soon as it hit track three, they lost me. On the previous albums, barring Tira Me, I enjoyed every song to at least some degree, and all of the songs gave me chills at least once. With little exception, I had no such luck with AMP, and there are two songs on there that I can't stand or sit through (tracks 3 and 8). That album had far and away the least replay value for me, and again, it actually contained tracks that I couldn't sit through, a definite first for this band. I thought that after making it through all of Cassandra Gemini I could make it through anything, but I was mistaken.
But having said that, they haven't released a bad album, so I'm looking forward to the one coming out this year.

EDIT:
Just to add a few things.

Melee released an album this year, and it has some good tunes on it. I like Chris's voice.

The Sound of Animals Fighting are supposed to be releasing an album in June. Now, this could be a remix album, a reissue of Tiger and the Duke, or it could bea new album. I am hoping for one of the latter possibilites.

finally, Saves the Day will also be releasing an album later this year. Sweet.

well..it sucks I find out the news about Aereogramme breaking up, but I may have come across another band to help fill that void.

Deas Vail http://myspace.com/deasvail

they have from hearing a few songs..a similar kind of Atmospheric Pop-Prog sound in just sampling them. But they have a little of what Mew has and Aereogramme I suppose too..riffs with higher-ranger vocals and piano.

And to add to this, their disc "All the Houses Look the Same" was released on MARCH 6th. If I get into them/that album, that'll make 4 albums released on 1-DAY this year I like. That probably would be a record for me.
